JUNO-winning jazz artist hits the road after cameo on Netflix hit series, Orange is the New Black
CALGARY, May 20, 2014 /CNW/ - JUNO Award-winning recording artist and multiple-JUNO-Award nominee, Brandi Disterheft, is embarking on a national Canadian tour this June. The upright bass player and her jazz quartet are touring Disterheft's JUNO-nominated third album, Gratitude. The album features her original composition "Blues for Nelson Mandela" which Disterheft plays during a cameo on the second season of Netflix's critically acclaimed series, Orange is the New Black, (to be released on June 6, 2014). Gratitude has also been licensed to Universal-EMI Japan.
Oscar Peterson, Grammy-winning Canadian jazz legend, said that Brandi Disterheft "is what we call serious." Disterheft's first album, Debut, won the 2008 JUNO Award for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year. Gratitude, her third album, was nominated for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year at the 2014 JUNO Awards. A young and fiery bassist, Disterheft has also studied with Ron Carter (former bassist for Miles Davis).
The Brandi Disterheft Quartet, comprised of pianist Joshua Goodman, drummer Morgan Childs and William Sperandei on trumpet, will be performing in Regina, Invermere, Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Medicine Hat and Saskatoon. "Gratitude", the second track on the album for which it is named, is in honour of Disterheft's cousin who died of cancer in 2012. "Gratitude means giving back to those around you in either words, song or simple actions," says Disterheft, the composer of the chamber orchestrated, Duke Ellington-inspired ballad.
Disterheft has chosen Calgary jeweller MeganKyle to accessorize her wardrobe for the Gratitude tour. MeganKyle is a luxury jewellery line infused with western and eastern influences and is designed to celebrate the essence of a woman. "Brandi's joie de vivre truly epitomizes the MeganKyle brand philosophy of spirituality, personality and energy: what empowers a woman to share who she is in a given moment." says Founder and Lead Designer of MeganKyle, Lorraine McElwain. Brandi Disterheft commented, "I'm delighted to partner with a jewellery brand that is guided by a philosophy to embrace life with curiosity and courage."
