ABB Canada supports Government of Canada infrastructure investment in mass transit

MONTREAL, Oct. 18, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is supportive of the Government of Canada announcement in the Speech from the Throne of investing $70 billion over the next decade in infrastructure for transportation networks.

These investments, particularly if made with energy-efficient technology, will elevate the competitiveness of Canada, save energy and protect our resources while creating jobs and increase productivity.

For Canadians balancing the pressures of work and daily life, investment in our roads, bridges and transportation networks means less congestion, shorter commutes and more time with family. No other investment yields as much potential for immediate return as investing in energy-efficient infrastructure. "We help to keep the world moving with new sustainable approaches that enable operators to use energy effectively, creating a low carbon railway industry that operates with maximum efficiency and reliability," says Daniel Simounet, Head of ABB's Rail business in North America.

ABB is a world leading independent supplier of innovative and reliable technologies to vehicle manufacturers, railway operators and system integrators whose North American Rail Center of Excellence is located in Montreal. With a comprehensive offering for rolling stock and infrastructure, ABB also provides lifetime service support, including maintenance and retrofit.

ABB's energy efficient solutions for mass transit systems include the storage and re-use of dissipated braking energy as a means of saving money, boosting efficiency, being more environmentally friendly and in some cases generating revenue by re-sale of stored-up energy. This innovative technology has a made-in-Canada story: it was conceived in Montreal by a team of engineers at Envitech Energy and now part of ABB. "It's an emerging technology that transit providers are starting to consider and explore, because it can pay for itself," says Jacques Poulin, Product Manager of Energy Storage, Rail Infrastructure, Discrete Automation and Motion at ABB's Pointe-Claire, Quebec facility. "It also helps reduce the carbon footprint." ABB has been supplying the Canadian utility, energy and industrial sector for over 80 years, and improving energy efficiency in Canada is the most immediate and economic way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB operates in over 100 countries and employs 145,000 people. In Canada (www.abb.ca), ABB is located in over 45 locations coast to coast and employs 5000 people.
