53rd Canada-Wide Science Fair - 21 young scientists of the Quebec delegation rewarded

MONTREAL, May 15,  2014 /CNW Telbec/ - 21 young Quebecers distinguished themselves this afternoon during the reward ceremony for the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). The 40 youths who made up the Quebec delegation, sponsored by Merck Canada Inc., made their way to Windsor, Ontario to present their science projects amongst the 500 top exhibitors in Canada.

Au rythme de l'haptique : best junior project

The project Au rythme de l'haptique, presented by Thomas Imbeault-Nepton, age 13, from École secondaire de l'Odyssée / Lafontaine in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, won the Platinum Award for Best Junior Project, which includes a $5,000 cash prize.

For his project, Thomas created a haptic-feedback vibration system to help people living with Parkinson's disease who have difficulty walking. He used the same principles as an audio-feedback system that had proven to be effective, but that also has many constraints. Thomas had his system tested by other students to assess its effectiveness.

Dr. Mauricio Ede, Medical Director, Merck Canada Inc., congratulates the 21 winners who were awarded multiple prizes and scholarships: "Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Canada-wide finals. This event gave them an extraordinary hands-on experience in scientific research and a glimpse at how rewarding a career in this field can be. At Merck, innovation lies at the heart of everything we do, and we are very proud to have supported this generation of future researchers. Special congratulations go to Thomas Imbeault-Nepton from Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean for winning the Platinium Award for Best Junior Project."

Marthe Poirier, provincial coordinator for the Science Fair, commented, "The Réseau CDLS-CLS is particularly proud of the Quebec delegation. As provincial coordinator for the Science Fair, I have the good fortune of watching the students as they evolve across the various levels of competition that make up the Science Fair program. From the regional fairs to the Canada-wide fair, their participation has brought with it unique experiences ad unforgettable encounters. Congratulations for all the distinctions received in Windsor: in Quebec, our next generation of scientists shines bright!"

"This year, the Québec delegation was especially young; probably one of the youngest ever to represent our province," added Roland Grand'Maison, Executive Director of the Conseil de développement du loisir scientifique. "So everyone in the Réseau CDLS-CLS is quite proud to see how well our finalists did in Windsor. It just goes to show that science is accessible to everyone, even the very young! And that's precisely one of the Réseau CDLS-CLS goals: to get younger students interested in science and technology."
