2012 Mid-Season Crop Insurance Summary: Estrie

LÉVIS, QC, July 11, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - La Financière agricole du Québec publishes mid-season crop insurance summaries for each Québec administrative region. These regional summaries report on weather conditions and their impact on perennial crops and hives, on seeding and growth of annuals, and on the first harvests as of July 3.

For the Estrie administrative region, weather conditions were good for planting and growth and the winter survival of perennials was also good. The maple syrup production season got off to an early start, but unseasonably warm temperatures in March resulted in below average yields and quality. Seeding conditions were good for annuals, with fast emergence and growth. Despite the hard frost in early May, little damage was reported, including apple trees. Weather conditions were good for the first mowing: hay yields were average to above average, and of good quality. Yields for annuals, apples, soft fruit and the first honeyflow should be average to above average. In short, the season is off to a very good start.

''This mid-season crop insurance summary gives an overview of crop conditions in the Estrie region. It's important to remember that La Financière agricole is here to support farmers with its Crop Insurance Program,'' the Regional Manager of the Sherbrooke Service Centre, Alain Perras, pointed out.
