New Language School, Culture & Language Connections in Montreal Introduces
J-Dogs for Charity
MONTREAL, Sept. 20 /CNW Telbec/ - On August 14th, at the 9th annual Matsuri Japon Festival in the Old Port, Culture & Language Connections (CLConnections) volunteers worked hard selling Japanese-style hotdogs for charity. Over 30,000 people made their way through the Matsuri Japon gates, enjoying demonstrations of taiko drumming, martial arts and other cultural performances.
In eight hours, CLConnections volunteers churned out almost 900 J-Dogs, a twist on your average hot dog, and raised almost $1700 for their charity of choice: Kiva.org. Kiva is an international micro-finance organization that allows donors to target a given sector with their donation. Kiva uses funding to help entrepreneurs in developing countries start small organizations or businesses in order to alleviate poverty.
Culture & Language Connections is a new language school in NDG, trying to put a unique spin on the concept of a traditional language school. "We are focused on teaching a language. However, our underlying philosophy is about bridging the gap between language learning and community involvement both on a local and global scale," says the General Director, Arnel Javier. "Volunteering and community building are new concepts for many of our international students. It's at the core of our existence as a school and definitely the best way to make their study of language come alive."
Through volunteering at community events like Matsuri Japon, organizing weekly community-led cultural workshops, and offering language programs that get international students volunteering in the community, Culture & Language Connections endeavours to take language learning to another level.
