CSL Vessel Grounded in the St-Lawrence Seaway - Clean up operations underway
MONTREAL, July 14 /CNW Telbec/ - On the second day after the grounding of one of its vessels, the M/V Richelieu, in the St-Lawrence Seaway at Cote Ste. Catherine, CSL Group reports that clean up operations and vessel repairs are well underway.
ECRC (Eastern Canada Response Corporation), the environmental specialists contracted by CSL to lead the clean-up operations, have submitted and put in place a 7-day plan that will effectively remove all traces of the spilled fuel from the shore and waters of the affected area. This plan is already activated and work is done in close collaboration with Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Starting this morning, and for the next 6 days, anywhere from 30 to 50 people will be employed to clean all traces of oil along the shoreline. Before the end of day, additional booms will be installed along the shoreline of both sides of the river in order to contain and prevent further spreading of the oil.
Measures are underway to remove the remaining fuel from the damaged tank of the M/V RICHELIEU.
Divers are presently installing custom made steel plates, fabricated overnight, to seal the breach in the hull allowing the vessel to sail safely to Quebec City to unload her cargo of wheat.
The vessel is expected to be ready to sail within the next 48 hours, subject to authorization by all relevant authorities.
The M/V Richelieu will then proceed to a shipyard for drydock and repair.
