MONTREAL, Feb. 20, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Montréal Science Centre is declaring "No Break for Music" and inviting visitors to explore the theme of music, with more than 30 special activities in tune with the Musik: From Sound to Emotion exhibition. Here are just a few of the fascinating, fun and surprising activities on offer from Saturday, March 2 to Sunday, March 10.
Ligue d'improvisation musicale de Montréal
- Whether they're improvising on a theme suggested by the audience, riffing on a clip played by the DJ or reinventing a movie soundtrack, the 5 musicians on stage are sure to amaze you and get you laughing or dancing.
The School of Rock 'n Roll
- Introduction to rock 'n roll. Aspiring rockers can choose an instrument and, under the supervision of a pro, learn to play a pop, rock or punk song.
Baratanga: a jam session with a tam-tam group
- A group of participants, guided by a professional, will create an original, exclusive percussion number.
Trash Guitar
- Have fun assembling and disassembling electric guitars, testing microphones and exploring different frequencies.
TELUS music zone
- Explore and try out the latest musical applications for tablets.
Music and science go well together! The Science Centre will be underscoring this truth with a line-up of speakers, all of whom are passionate about music. They will each be presenting mini-lectures on a variety of topics, a different one each day. For instance, Professor Caroline Traube, who teaches psychoacoustics, orchestra conductor and violinist Jean-François Rivest, who orchestrated the songs of Michel Rivard and others, and the soon-to-be-famous Dr. Julien, who will be sharing his "Music garage" with us. And that's not all! The Science Centre's educators and music lovers will be on hand to lead the many different workshops where visitors can experiment with music.

Musik: From Sound to Emotion
You have until March 10 to visit the Science Centre's most recent original, interactive exhibition, Musik: From Sound to Emotion. The exhibition is based on scientific research and aims to show visitors the important role of the brain in the musical experience, for listeners, performers and composers. It also strives to answer the question: how does music create emotions?
Visitors are invited to step into a composer's shoes and create a piece of music, step by step, using a touch-screen digital music player. With the help of advice from musicians from the Montréal group Simple Plan, they'll express an emotion by selecting a rhythm, different melodies, an accompaniment and timbres to make their own composition.
IMAX®TELUS
New at the IMAX®TELUS Theatre: Flight of the Butterflies 3D. Despite their extremely light weight, monarchs make one of the longest migrations on Earth. Audiences witness the perilous journey of these marvels of nature, and join hundreds of millions of butterflies in the mountain peaks of Mexico. They'll be captivated by the breathtaking cinematography and the compelling story of a scientist's 40-year search to find the monarchs' secret hideaways.
Then there's Rocky Mountain Express, which propels audiences on a steam train journey through the spellbinding vistas of the Canadian Rockies.
Last but not least is To the Arctic 3D, a multi-award winning film that transports us into the Arctic wilderness to witness a fascinating struggle to survive and illustrates some of the issues facing our planet. To the Arctic 3D takes us on a never before seen journey into the lives of a mother polar bear and her two six-month old cubs.
There's something new for families with small children visiting the Montréal Science Centre. Clic! The zone for curious young minds is a new discovery space dedicated to visitors ages 4 to 7. They're sure to enjoy exploring Clic!, where they can have fun developing their sense of logic, their creativity and their dexterity.
