Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition Comes to the Ontario Science Centre in June 2007

    TORONTO, Feb. 12 /CNW/ - April 10, 1912 the world's largest ship,
Titanic, sets sail from Southampton, England on its maiden voyage to New York.
Five days later after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic, Titanic
sinks and 1,500 lives are lost. On April 10, 2007, in recognition of the 95th
anniversary of her launch, tickets go on sale to the public for Titanic: The
Artifact Exhibition opening at the Ontario Science Centre for a six month run,
June 2, 2007.
Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is a chronological journey through life
on the historic ship. Each visitor becomes a passenger and experiences the
excitement and the subsequent tragedy of that fateful night in 1912. Visitors
will be able to step into the past as they view remarkable recreations of a
first class stateroom, third class cabins and the Ship's Boiler Room.
"Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is an amazing and inspirational voyage
telling the story poignantly and passionately through the artifacts, and
giving visitors a very personal perspective on the legendary ship," said
Lesley Lewis, CEO of the Ontario Science Centre. "This exhibition is a natural
extension of our recent transformation. By reaching out to wider audiences and
offering more varied experiences, the Science Centre provides an opportunity
for visitors to better understand the world around them, in this instance
through diverse subjects such as shipbuilding history, deep-sea recovery and
the science of conservation."
The tragic tale is brought to life with photographs, sounds and stories
of the passengers and crew members. The exhibition includes over 250 artifacts
recovered from the wreckage site, 3,800 metres below the surface of the
Atlantic Ocean. In the Memorial Room, visitors will learn what happened in
Canada and around the globe as the world came to terms with the enormity of
the disaster. The relief funds, the efforts to find lost loved ones and to
learn details and theories of the sinking dominated the world press for years
after the tragedy.
"The exhibition itself is very dramatic - the sounds and images will
engage and fascinate visitors with their remarkable reality," Ms. Lewis
continued. "Equally fascinating, is the intricate scientific process of
conservation that virtually reverses the impact of 80 years on the ocean floor
and makes century-old artifacts seem 'new' again."
The Exhibition is produced by RMS Titanic, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary
of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. RMS Titanic, Inc is the only company permitted by
law to recover objects from the wreck of the Titanic. The Company was granted
Salvor-in-Possession rights to the wreck of Titanic by a United States federal
court in 1994 and has conducted seven research and recovery expeditions to the
Titanic where it recovered approximately 5,500 artifacts. More than 18 million
people have seen this exhibition in over 50 international venues.
Tickets will go on sale April 10, 2007 online or through the Ontario
Science Centre's box office at 416-696-1000. This is a timed ticketed
exhibition with a separate admission price. Admission prices are: $29.50 for
adults, $23.50 for seniors (65+) and youths (13-17), $19.50 for children and
include admission to the Science Centre. Hours for the exhibition are regular
Ontario Science Centre hours: 10:00am to 5:00pm, seven days a week. Except
Fridays, hours are 10:00am to 9:00pm for Titanic exhibit only. Run of
engagement: June 2, 2007 to January 6, 2008.
Journey to the floor of the North Atlantic, to the final resting place of
the world's most famous shipwreck, in Titanica, a 40-minute IMAX documentary
that will run in tandem with Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Intertwined
with eerie deep sea video images of the wreck site is the story of one
survivor, punctuated by beautifully preserved archival photographs of the
ship.

The Ontario Science Centre uses science as the lens to inspire and
actively engage people in new ways of seeing, understanding and thinking about
themselves and the world. The Centre is also a leading developer of
interactive exhibitions for science centres around the world. The Ontario
Science Centre is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Produced by RMS TITANIC INC. A Division of Premier Exhibitions, Inc.
