How to talk about science so politicians will listen

CALGARY, Dec. 1 /CNW/ - In the highly scientific - and highly regulated - agriculture industry, how to talk about science so politicians will hear what you're saying and develop workable regulations can be a bit of a mystery. It's also the topic of Preston Manning's speech at the GrowCanada(R) conference tomorrow evening at The Calgary Hyatt.

"Canadian agriculture, like many other industries, suffers when political decisions are not firmly based on predictable, science. This is a crucial area for us to understand and excel at, which is why we invited Preston Manning to speak at our conference," said Jim Wispinki, conference co-chair and president of Calgary-based Dow Agrosciences Canada Inc.

"Many scientists and scientific associations are frustrated about how to communicate their ideas on science, technology, and innovation to politicians," Manning says. "And many politicians are insecure about communicating their ideas to, or responding to proposals from, the scientific community."

Manning served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1997 to 2000, and in 2007 he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. Since retiring from Parliament in 2002, Manning has become a much-sought out speaker on a range of topics including strengthening relations between the scientific and political communities.

Manning will speak Wednesday, December 2 at 8 p.m. Media are invited to attend.

Innovation, stewardship and sustainability will be the focus of the GrowCanada(R) conference, which is being co-hosted by nine of agriculture's most influential associations. Close to 500 delegates with various roles in Canada's agricultural value chain will in Calgary December 1 - 3, 2009.

A full listing of conference speakers can be found at http://www.growcanadaconference.ca/2009/about.php

Media are invited to attend the conference, which is being held at the Hyatt Regency Calgary, 700 Centre St. S.E in the Imperial Room. Please register in the Grand Foyer 1 upon arrival.
