TORONTO, Jan. 25, 2019 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Ontario presented a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), to Angela Swan, today, at its Call to the Bar ceremony at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.
Swan received the LLD in recognition of her work as a highly respected and dedicated lawyer and legal educator, and for her outstanding commitment to her clients, colleagues and students and to the rule of law. She has also established herself as one of the pre-eminent experts in contract law in Canada.
Through her example and through her roles as lawyer, teacher, scholar, author, legal researcher, and law reformer, Swan has been influential in the education of several generations of law students, lawyers and jurists in Canada.
Called to the Bar in 1970, Swan is counsel at Aird & Berlis LLP, where she plays an educational and advisory role to the firm's lawyers across all practice areas. She assists with research and opinions on many legal issues, including corporate transactions and civil and commercial litigation.
She received the Ontario Bar Association's Award for Distinguished Service in 2016 and was awarded the Walter Owen Book Prize in 2007 for her book, Canadian Contract Law. Her book and her many other publications in contract law are frequently cited by courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court of Canada. She is frequently retained by other law firms as an expert witness in connection with matters pertaining to the law in Ontario.

Law Society Treasurer, Malcolm M. Mercer awarded the honorary LLD to Swan, who then delivered the keynote address to the 261 new lawyers at the ceremony.
