Message from the Governor General of Canada on the occasion of National Philanthropy Day

OTTAWA, Nov. 15, 2015 /CNW/ - Canada was the first country in the world to officially recognize November 15 as National Philanthropy Day, and I think that says a lot about who we are. Canadians are caring people, and philanthropy is all about the love of humankind.

Today, across the country, generous and committed people are honouring individuals who give so much of their time, talent and treasure, as well as organizations that work in the community. I want to congratulate every Canadian who is showcasing a generous spirit and who is leading the way.

Two years ago, to reinforce the innate Canadian instinct to share, we started My Giving Moment, a national campaign to catalyze giving and volunteerism. Today, we launch a new chapter in this initiative. We're calling it #SnapSomeGood.

Now you can share your photos of philanthropy in action on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using #SnapSomeGood. By doing so, you encourage others to give!

Together, we can reinforce the important idea that anyone can be a philanthropist. Whether your contribution is big or small, all giving moments make a real difference in your community.

Time and again I have seen how much Canadians care about each other. They show it every day in countless, imaginative ways. Together, we can build a more caring country, one act of giving at a time.

Have a good National Philanthropy Day!
