Fancy colored diamonds continue to fetch high auction prices as buyer interest in diamonds remains strong. "The recent activity for colored diamonds at high-end auctions like Christie's and Sotheby's is fascinating to watch. Savvy investors are seeing how valuable and important fancy colored diamonds can be," explained Michael King, Director of Trading for Paragon International Wealth Management, a Toronto-based investment firm that specializes in the acquisition of fancy colored diamonds for investors.
Several exceptional pieces of colored diamond jewelry were among the highlights at Christie's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels Sale on May 30, 2017.
The top lot of the sale, based on pre-sale estimates, was a ring with blue and pink diamonds from luxury jeweler, Moussaieff. The ring has a 3.98-carat fancy blue vivid diamond in the center with a surround of 14 pink diamonds.
A second colored diamond ring displayed at the Hong Kong auction was an extremely rare natural green diamond. The centerpiece of the ring is a 5.28-carat fancy intense green diamond surrounded by pink diamonds.
Other auction highlights included a pair of colored diamond earrings, each of which is set with an oval fancy purplish-pink diamond and surrounded by colorless diamonds. Also sold was a rare colored diamond bracelet, made with oval pink diamonds, one oval-shaped blue diamond and circular-cut fancy vivid purplish-pink diamonds.
The first half of 2017 has seen record-breaking sales of several notable and valuable colored diamonds, Paragon International Wealth Management's King mentioned. He cited the record-breaking sale of the "Pink Star" diamond for $71.2 million at Sotheby's in April 2017, as well as a pair of fancy colored diamond earrings -- one pink, one blue -- which sold for $57 million at Sotheby's in May this year.
