BUILT TO LAST - The founding of a 17th-Century chapel

MONTREAL, May 23, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Starting June 1, 2013, the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum will present the discovery tour, BUILT TO LAST, The founding of a 17th-Cenrutury chapel. Offered in the afternoons in both French and English, this remarkable tour will take visitors to the archaeological site located under Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in Old Montreal.

Three hundred years ago, a whole community came together to realize the dream of that courageous women, Marguerite Bourgeoys. Masons, carpenters, joiners and other workers dedicated their ancestral skills to the building of Montreal's first stone chapel. In this guided visit of the archaeological site, you can admire the remains of that chapel and so form an idea of the scale of such a building project it the 17th century.

The uncovering of the remains of the chapel was one of the great archaeological discoveries of Old Montreal.  Before the dig, our knowledge of this building from the earliest days of Ville-Marie and of the first Montrealers was very limited.  We had no reliable representation or detailed description of the chapel. So the excavations helped fill a considerable gap in the history of Montreal.

This, then, is an opportunity to visit a major archaeological site in the company of a guide. More than just remains, the foundations of the first stone chapel bear witness to the fervour and community spirit of the first Montrealers.
