MEDIA ADVISORY - Lieutenant Governor Welcomes Their Royal Highnesses for Diamond Jubilee Medal Presentation
TORONTO, May 16, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, is pleased to host Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, on Tuesday, May 22nd.
The Lieutenant Governor will welcome the Royal Couple to the Lieutenant Governor's Suite before inviting them to present six Diamond Jubilee medals to a small group of extraordinary Ontarians who exemplify Her Majesty's 21st birthday pledge "I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service". (see attached list). Following the medal presentation, Their Royal Highnesses will meet with a larger group of people representing a broad cross-section of Ontario's population.

BACKGROUNDER
RECIPIENTS OF DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL PRESENTATION
His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, will present Diamond Jubilee medals to the following six recipients at a special ceremony on Tuesday, May 22nd.
Mr. Andrew Williams - Andrew Williams is the Program Officer for the Yonge Street Mission. He oversees programs and services the Mission offers to low-income and marginalized people in society. Andrew came to the Mission from the corporate world. Each year, he ran a fundraising campaign that culminated in taking a group of employees to Africa. After his last trip, he realized he wanted to devote his career to charitable work, and joined the Yonge Street Mission staff in 2011. Andrew's business acumen is a decided asset to the Mission. Andrew has volunteered in various programs, including the New Hope Fellowship and the Children's Breakfast Club. He was appointed to YSM's Board of Directors in 2008, serving for three years before stepping down to take the Program Director's position. One of Andrew's goals is to create more opportunities for corporate and church groups to help the Mission serve marginalized people.
Mr. Rahul Singh - Born in Montreal, Québec, Rahul Singh is a Toronto paramedic and the founder and Executive Director of GlobalMedic - a humanitarian relief organization that provides disaster relief in areas affected by natural disasters or complex emergencies. Since founding GlobalMedic in 1998, Singh has led 30 international missions with the organization. Singh's work around the world has been widely recognized. For his accomplishments, Singh was named to the 2010 Time 100 list of 'The World's Most Influential People'. He was a recipient of 'Canada's Top 40 Under 40 Award' in 2009. The Globe and Mail included him on the list of 'Canadians Changing the World' and he was chosen by the Toronto Star as one of 12 'Canadians Changing the Way we Think'. In 2006, the Prime Minister presented him with the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce's 'Humanitarian of the Year Award', and in 2012 he was made a member of the Order of Ontario.
Ms. Tamara Gordon - Tamara Gordon, graduate of York University's Administrative Studies Management program, was left a paraplegic after sustaining a spinal cord injury and nerve damage to her dominant hand in 2002 while on a skiing trip with her high school. Though confined to a wheelchair, she made it clear that her disability cannot be mistaken for inability. Ms. Gordon won an unprecedented number of scholarships and awards as a student, including the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers. She has said, "If you take advantage of the opportunities presented to you, get involved and volunteer as often as possible on campus and in the community at large, and if you consistently try to be the best that you can be... then the sky really is the limit." Gordon hopes to become a family lawyer and establish her own business that will benefit children and families who are less fortunate.
Mrs. Barbara Goldring - Mrs. Barbara Goldring is a lifelong volunteer, monarchist, and philanthropist. Most recently, she has championed the founding of the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport at the University of Toronto. Some of her other notable philanthropic work include supporting the Yorktown Family Services (shelter for abused women, and treatment centre for children with mental health issues), the March of Dimes, the Ontario Heritage Trust, Smile Theatre (a professional theatre company dedicated to performing for senior citizens), the Canadian Nurses Foundation, and the Gardiner Museum. In 2008, she received the Silver Badge of Service from the Monarchist League of Canada for her significant contribution to the promotion and support of the League and Monarchy.
Mr. Lou Wise - Lou Wise first earned his pilot's wings in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War, and since that time has logged some 3,000 hours of flying time. In 1939, Wise signed up for the RCAF. After the war, Wise says he "became a weekend pilot". Wise also worked for the Avro Aviation Limited as head of the film department documenting the development of the Avro Arrow. Subsequently he took a job in the media resources department of the Toronto Board of Education. He is also an award-winning environmental photographer. Over the past 30 years, Wise has taken thousands of aerial photographs of Ontario's wetlands and waterways for a number of environmental organizations, compiling an unprecedented birds-eye-view archive of southern Ontario's dwindling wilderness.
Mr. Nathan Tidridge - Nathan Tidridge is a celebrated high school teacher of history and government in Ontario. Tidridge teaches at Waterdown District High School, and was awarded the Premier's Award for Teaching Excellence (Teacher of the Year) in 2007. Most recently, Nathan wrote 'Canada's Constitutional Monarchy' about its history, heraldic symbols, role in the constitution, and the evolution of the Crown in Canada. His superb writing and teaching abilities are to the benefit of his students and the citizens of Canada.
