Media Advisory - The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Project hosts a Crazy for Cricket Community Event

TORONTO, May 1, 2012 /CNW/ - The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Project is hosting a Crazy for Cricket Community Event on Sunday, May 6, 2012. The event is sponsored by RBC in celebration of the bank's $75,000.00 contribution to the project. Indian cricket star and veteran Sunil Joshi will be a featured guest and player.

The event will take place in two parts. In the afternoon, a cricket match will be held between the RBC corporate cricket team and an all star team of youth, adults and staff from Valley Park Middle School and Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. The twenty over match will be held at the Toronto Cricket Club, 141 Wilson Avenue from 1 PM to 4 PM. Free shuttle buses will leave from Valley Park Middle School at 12:30 PM.

The honourable MPP Kathleen Wynne will bat the first ball of the match, alongside MP John Carmichael, Ward 26 Councillor John Parker and Trustee Gerri Gershon.

The second part of the event is a musical evening and dinner from 6 PM to 10 PM at Valley Park Middle School at 130 Overlea Blvd. The ticket price is $10/person and will raise funds for the community's Go Green Cricket Field Initiative. The school will come alive with Bollywood music and dance with performances by Shyamala Ram, Tariq Hameed and R & B United.

About Valley Park's Go Green Cricket Field Project

The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field is a $1.5-M initiative to bring a cricket pitch to Toronto's Thorncliffe and Flemingdon communities. It is a partnership between VPMS and the two neighbourhood settlement services agencies: Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office and Flemingdon Neighbourhood Services. Through the vision of architect Shompa Hai, the community hub will connect newcomers to the area within a sustainable environment while creating an opportunity to transform an underutilized schoolyard into a vibrant, interactive space. Construction starts on a $1.1 million Phase One on July 1 which will complete by the end of December, 2012 a cricket field, a surrounding running track, bioswale, wetland, urban forest and butterfly meadow.
