6,500 Youth, Leaders and Volunteers Converge on Sylvan Lake, Alberta For Scouts Canada's Largest Gathering
OTTAWA, June 25, 2013 /CNW/ - From July 6-13, 2013 more than 6,500 Canadian Scouting youth and volunteers will converge at Camp Woods, Sylvan Lake, Alberta for the ultimate Scouting experience - Scouts Canada 2013 Canadian Scout Jamboree (CJ'13). The largest gathering of Scouts in Canada, CJ'13 will provide youth aged 11 to 14, leaders and volunteers with a week of new experiences, friendships and adventure.
"CJ'13 gives youth the opportunity to meet new friends, challenge themselves to try new things and explore the outdoors all while experiencing personal development and growth that only a jamboree experience can bring," said Kaylee Galipeau, National Youth Commissioner and Chair of the National Youth Network, Scouts Canada. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that brings together thousands of Scouts from across Canada."
During the week, Jamboree participants will be involved in a number of activities including: camping, whitewater rafting, canoeing, snorkeling, hiking, zip lining, rappelling, archery, orienteering, raft building and much more. Some participants will also explore some of Alberta's attractions such as the Calgary Stampede and the West Edmonton Mall.
Scouts Canada is also working with local authorities to investigate potential ways for Jamboree participants to give support to Albertans in the wake of vast flooding that is taking place across the province.
"Scouts are known for helping others," said Andrew Price, Chief Commissioner and Chair of the Board of Governors for Scouts Canada. "We will have thousands of youth and adults coming to Alberta in just under two weeks, and we want to lend a hand where we can during our visit to this great province."
The CJ'13 theme is based on Four Worlds - West World, Atlantis, The Bone Yard and Sylvan Crusades - where Scouts take part in prehistoric-themed adventures including mountain explorations, castle raids and dives for sunken treasure. The weeklong event will feature live performances by Canadian musical comedy trio The Arrogant Worms and young bluegrass band The Abrams Brothers.
"CJ'13 will provide Scouts with a one-of-a-kind experience that challenges and engages them through exploration and outdoor adventure," said Bernie Lutes, CJ'13 Planning Chair. "This year's Four Worlds theme allowed us to create an adventurous and exciting program full of activities that build confidence and promote leadership while also encouraging team building and skills development."
CJ'13's official mascot, Albert the Albertasaurus, is visiting Scout Troops across Canada on his way to Sylvan Lake in time for the CJ'13's Opening Ceremony.
