ZyXEL Offers End-to-End Ethernet Solutions for Fiber Deployments

Carrier Grade Ethernet Switch Series for Aggregation, Access and Premises

CHICAGO, June 18 /CNW/ - As more businesses are moving to Fiber over
Ethernet for their Internet connection, ZyXEL Communications today announced
its Ethernet switch series, which offers end-to-end solutions for fiber
deployments. The company's Ethernet switch series provides carrier-grade
aggregation, access and premises solutions for Gigabit fiber and 100M fiber

For many businesses, fiber has become a preferred choice, because unlike
cable and DSL it can reach higher bandwidth speeds and can go long distances
without degradation in speed and quality. In addition, Ethernet is already
supported on PCs and other network devices, resulting in faster performance.
With many businesses taking notice, the overall Ethernet switch market is
trending upward, as sales are increasing at a rapid pace. According to
Vertical Systems Group, carrier Ethernet services for businesses are expected
to grow to $24 billion by 2010.

"Service providers are looking for a flexible and reliable line of
switches that enable them to deploy fiber over Ethernet for two applications
-- Ethernet to the home (ETTH) and Ethernet to the business (ETTB)," said
Munira Brooks, senior vice president of sales, marketing and business
development at ZyXEL. "These business and consumer deployments each have their
own requirements, and ZyXEL provides ideal, end-to-end solutions for both

For businesses in particular, ZyXEL's Ethernet solutions offer the
following key benefits:

-- Layer 2 VPN -- L2 VPN can connect geographically dislocated buildings
together through the service provider network as if they were on the same
Local Area Network. It also allows 802.1q VLAN Tag through the service
provider network without conflicting with other customers and has better
throughput performance compared to traditional L3 VPN protocols.

-- Intelligent Traffic Policing, Flexible Bandwidth Control and QoS --
Dual-rate-three-color traffic policing allows service providers to maintain a
minimum level of service to the customer (Committed Information Rate) while
also controlling the max bandwidth available to the customer when there is no
network congestion (Peak Information Rate). Bandwidth control in increments of
64 kbps allows service providers to easily migrate existing customers without
any changes in their profiles. Eight hardware priority queues per port allows
for maximum flexibility in QoS classification.

-- Resiliency -- RSTP allows the network to recover and redirect traffic
in the event a link is physically broken. BPS redirects power to the switch in
the event the internal power supply of the switch fails. This adds an extra
layer of protection, reduces downtime and helps maintain service to customers.

In the aggregation class, the ZyXEL GS-4012F is an intelligent 12-port
Gigabit multilayer (L2/L3/L4) Ethernet switch that provides carrier-class
availability, resiliency and redundancy at the aggregation layer. The GS-4012F
has advanced management capabilities, allowing administrators to manage 24
switches with a single IP address. This greatly reduces operating costs and
offers more flexible maintenance of ZyXEL switches. With these sophisticated
functionalities, the IT staff is empowered to build a highly secure and
efficient carrier-class network with minimum effort. Also in the aggregation
class, the ZyXEL GS-3012F is a 12-port Gigabit L2+ Ethernet switch that
provides carrier-class availability, resiliency and redundancy at the
aggregation/access layer. The GS-3012F can be combined with the MC1000-SFP and
the ES-2108-G for customer premises to form an end-to-end Gigabit fiber access

ZyXEL's access switch, the ES-3124F, delivers robust performance in
network resiliency, QoS, IP multicasting and security. It is the ideal access
layer solution for cable, utilities or municipality operators and service
providers to adopt in 100M Active Ethernet ETTx deployments. QoS features like
multi-layer (L2/L3/L4) ACL, eight priority queues, DSCP and WFQ scheduling
algorithm all maximize bandwidth usage and improve network service quality,
while MVR and IGMP snooping enables effective IP TV multicasting. In addition,
Fast Leave eradicates streaming quality disturbance when users surf between
different channels, and bandwidth control with granularity of 64 kbps brings
better bandwidth administration to network operators. The ES-3124F can be
combined with ES-2108-F and the ES-315-F for customer premises to form an
end-to-end 100M fiber access solution.

To round out the premises class, ZyXEL offers four switches. The ES-315-F
is a 4-port L2 CPE device with one 100M fiber uplink interface. The ES-2108-F
is an 8-port L2 CPE device with one 100M fiber uplink interface. The
MC1000-SFP is a single port Gigabit CPE device with one 1000M Fiber uplink
interface. The ES-2108-G is an 8-port L2 CPE device with one 1000M Fiber
uplink interface.

All ZyXEL switch models support the latest single strand fiber
transceiver (BX type) for twice the capacity on the same fiber installation
compared to a traditional dual strand fiber transceiver.
