MONTREAL, June 11 /CNW Telbec/ - The 430 Steelworkers employed at Xstrata
in Montreal-East have been on strike since two o'clock this afternoon. The
conciliation meeting held this morning was not sufficient to break the
impasse. "The company refused to budge an iota. Management would only consider
a restructuring of its original proposal. This makes no sense. The copper
market has never been better, and it's our turn to benefit from the wealth
being produced by this multinational company," declared union staffer Denis
Lévesque and Denis Matteau, President of this local.
Negotiations foundered on two issues: improvements to the pension plan
and salary increases. On June 1, workers voted 92% against the company's
Xstrata Copper is a copper refinery located in Montreal-East. The
collective agreement ran out on May 31, 2007.
