WSIB Releases Mask Up! and Live Firefighter Video

TORONTO, June 14 /CNW/ - The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB)
will release the video "Mask Up! and Live", produced in partnership with the
Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA), this morning at the
10th Annual OPFFA conference in Kingston, Ontario.
The video release marks the beginning of Phase II of the WSIB's
Firefighter Safety Campaign, created to address occupational diseases among
Ontario firefighters. Phase I of the campaign, launched in August 2006, was an
awareness-raising poster campaign promoting firefighter health and safety.
"Firefighters are local heroes who take enormous risks and face
occupational hazards every day and are regularly exposed to smoke and toxic
fumes," says Steve Mahoney, Chair of the WSIB. "For firefighters who develop
cancer from this kind of exposure, every day is a fight for life. That's why
we produced this video - so everyone will recognize the dangers and potential
diseases that arise all too often in the firefighting profession."
The devastating, life-changing effects that occupational diseases have on
firefighters and their families are the focus of the new video. Mask Up! and
Live features documentary-style interviews with firefighters, including
veterans who are battling cancer and new recruits who are learning the dangers
of the job. Both groups emphasize training and the use of personal protective
gear - especially masks and self-contained breathing apparatus - as keys to
preventing occupational diseases.
To obtain more information about the campaign and its partners, check the
WSIB website at In addition, copies of the DVD are available
for $15.00 by contacting Monica Szabo of the Municipal Health and Safety
Association (MHSA) at 905-319-0797 or by e-mail at $10.00 of
the proceeds of the sales of the DVD will go to the Ontario Firefighters
Memorial Foundation.

the province's occupational health and safety system. The WSIB administers
no-fault workplace insurance for employers and their workers and is committed
