WINNIPEG, Feb. 12 /CNW/ - Thao Nguyen and Quy Vo have worked hard for
years and today, they are SET FOR LIFE! The Winnipeg couple were thrilled to
find they'd won their choice of $1,000 a week for 25 years or $1 Million on a
SCRATCH 'N WIN SET FOR LIFE ticket!
Quy, who is 37 years old, owns Windsor Foods at 1940 Main Street. His
35-year-old wife, Thao, works beside him every day - from 10 in the morning
until 8 at night. They have had no days off in the four years they have had
the store, just a bit of a break on Sundays when the couple works eight hours
instead of the usual 10.
On a slow Monday morning in the store, while Quy was at the grocery
wholesalers, Thao bought a SET FOR LIFE ticket and scratched it - winning $5.
There were no customers needing her attention, so Thao bought another ticket
with her winnings.
"I was looking for $5 or $10," Thao laughed. "I didn't see it, so I
thought I didn't win." But the three 'SET FOR LIFE" symbols on Game 1 raised
her curiosity. English is Thao's second language, and she was not sure she
understood what she had won. So, she checked her ticket through the terminal
and found out she had won $1 million!
"I was upset. I was nervous," she said. "A customer came into the store a
few minutes later and asked if I was sick!"
Thao wanted to tell her husband and called him on his cell phone. "But
then I was afraid he might get excited and have a car accident! So, I didn't
It seemed a long time before Quy returned from the wholesaler. When he
did, Thao showed him the winning ticket.
"I couldn't believe my eyes," he said. "But then I picked her up and
hugged her and laughed. We were so excited!"
When asked about their plans for the windfall, the couple said that Thao
has not been back to her native Vietnam since she arrived in Winnipeg 15 years
ago. The happy winners are thrilled that they will be able to fulfill Thao's
longtime dream of seeing her father once again.
