Whitecap Books to help share the story of Miga, Quatchi and Sumi with children across Canada

    VANCOUVER, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the
2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) today welcomed Canadian-owned
Whitecap Books as an Official Licensee for the 2010 Winter Games. As part of
the agreement, Whitecap Books will begin publishing and distributing copies of
the illustrated children's book The Story of the Vancouver 2010 Mascots to
retailers across Canada starting today, providing more children the chance to
share in the journey of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
    "Whitecap Books is one of the largest and most respected book publishing
companies in the country and we are pleased to welcome them to the Vancouver
2010 Licensing Program," said Dennis Kim, VANOC's director of licensing and
merchandising. "Whitecap Books will help us tell the story of Miga, Quatchi
and Sumi to children across the country and help them discover the magical
journey of the mascots while learning about the true spirit of the 2010 Winter
    The mascot book will be available at www.vancouver2010.com, the Olympic
Stores at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), Hbc's the Bay and Zellers
locations Canada-wide and leading bookstores throughout the country for
$14.95 CAD. An initial 3,000 copies first printed in November 2007 to coincide
with the mascots' unveiling quickly sold out before the holiday season.
    "Based on sales from the initial print run and pre-orders already secured
by Whitecap Books, The Story of the Vancouver 2010 Mascots has already reached
national best-seller status," continued Kim. "It is heartening to see children
from across Canada embrace these loveable ambassadors of the 2010 Winter
    Children from around the world are encouraged to visit
www.vancouver2010.com to discover a wide range of interactive and online
activities that take traditional Games mascots to a new level. Children can
enjoy learning about the Vancouver 2010 mascots' recycling program in
"Operation Recycle," play virtual hockey in "Quatchi's Shootout Shutout," and
design, print and colour their very own mascot scenes. These are just a few
examples of the many mascot features available at www.vancouver2010.com.
    To date, 39 companies have signed on to the Vancouver 2010 Official
Licensee Program. The sale of Vancouver 2010 official licensed products
contributes directly to Games revenues which support the financing and staging
of the 2010 Winter Games.
