What Issues Do College Students Face?

TORONTO, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - February isn't just another month this year for members of the College Student Alliance (CSA). Across Ontario student leaders representing their student associations (SA) will be reaching out to their students on campuses in an Advocacy Awareness campaign. Designed to bring awareness of what SA's do on behalf of the students they represent, they will also engage students in discussions about issues that are critical to their education success—tuition, access, credit transfer and OSAP are just a few issues that students will be able to have their say on.

"The goal of Advocacy Awareness is to engage college and college-university students of the issues we champion on our member campuses," states Justin Fox, CSA President. He adds, "We want to hear what the issues are for students and let the average student have a say. This is important to us as an organization that represents the majority of college students in Ontario."

Today's student demographic has changed in comparison to past decades. Ontario's SA's now represent a very diverse population. The effects of the economic downturn and the progression of the knowledge economy in Ontario, has forced SA's to redefine their services and events to meet the needs of the students they represent.

"One of our primary means to communicate with students during Advocacy Awareness will be through social media- facebook and twitter -giving SA's and the CSA an opportunity to hear directly from the students we represent," replies Justin Fox. "At the same time we want to bring a higher awareness of the commitment and work college SA's do on the behalf of their students."

The Ontario government has done much to improve both the affordability and accessibility of post-secondary education for students as well as transferability this year; however there still remains much to be done. Students will have that opportunity to let CSA know what they'd like to see improved in their college experience.

The College Student Alliance (CSA) is an advocacy and leadership organization, which has been proudly serving Ontario's college and college-university students since 1975. The CSA currently represents 17 colleges and 25 member councils with over 135,000 full-time student members throughout the province.
