WestJet signs on with Carbonzero to provide carbon offsets to Guests

TORONTO, Dec. 14, 2011 /CNW/ - Carbonzero is pleased to announce that they have been selected as the official carbon offset provider for WestJet, Canada's leading low-fare airline, providing safe air transportation within North America and internationally. As part of WestJet's environmental commitment, which includes one of the newest and most efficient fleets in North America, Carbonzero has developed a voluntary carbon offset program to allow WestJet's Guests to measure and mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel. Through this program, Guests will be able to offset their flight through their investments in verified projects that make real and measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are pleased with our new relationship with Carbonzero," said Mike McNaney, WestJet Vice-President, Environment and Regulatory Affairs. "Many of our Guests are looking for an opportunity to offset their carbon footprint and we are confident that Carbonzero has quality offset programs, based in Canada, which will provide our Guests with that opportunity."

Guests booking air travel on westjet.com and WestJet Vacations will have the option to calculate their flight's carbon footprint and purchase carbon offsets through Carbonzero.ca at a discounted rate. The site will provide a variety of calculation tools and educational material to assist WestJet Guests in making an informed decision to offset their flight. WestJet Guests who decide to offset their flight will be provided with a digital certificate, fully auditable through the newly launched Carbonzero Registry.  The Carbonzero Registry, located at www.carbonzero.ca/registry is a public search portal for carbon offset certificate holders to review the project details associated with their offset purchase.

"The agreement between WestJet and Carbonzero will produce measurable, verified emissions reductions that will provide Canadians with clear environmental, economic and social benefits," said David Sharpless, Chairman and CEO of Carbonzero. "We support Canadian-based projects which create jobs, advance technology and support the local communities in which they originate."

Carbonzero will provide WestJet Guests a variety of carbon offsets of different standards and geographic locations. Starting with a Niagara, Ontario-based landfill gas to energy project and a Montreal, Quebec-based social housing energy efficiency project, Carbonzero will introduce new and exciting high-quality projects to WestJet Guests on a regular basis.
