Western Canada Lottery advises players of encashment incidents on MILLIONAIRE LIFE

WINNIPEG, March 7 /CNW/ - Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) has
determined that there were two separate encashment incidents on MILLIONAIRE
LIFE tickets the morning after the draw (Thursday, March 1st) within WCLC's
region of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories and
Nunavut. The incidents currently affect approximately 450 MILLIONAIRE LIFE
tickets with a total prize value of $3,668.
The system incidents, both of which resulted from human error, occurred
on the Prairies and Territories only and did not affect any other games or any
other lottery regions. The Corporation will advise players of the incidents -
and how affected players can contact WCLC - through the Corporation's website
starting today, and in newspaper advertisements tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday.
The first incident affected the Corporation's self service Ticket
Checkers - devices placed at a limited number of lottery Retail locations to
assist players in checking tickets themselves. Players who checked their
MILLIONAIRE LIFE tickets on Ticket Checkers from 6:00 a.m. CT/5:00 a.m. MT to
10:52 a.m. CT/9:52 a.m. MT the morning after the draw received the message
"Not a Winner. Check other draws later." As MILLIONAIRE LIFE prize information
was not yet available, players should have received the message "Please try
Twelve hundred and ten (1,210) of the 1,626 MILLIONAIRE LIFE winning
tickets run through the self service Ticket Checkers during that time have
since been cashed through the Ticket Terminal, but 416 winning MILLIONAIRE
LIFE tickets have yet to been cashed: 214 in Manitoba, 192 in Saskatchewan and
10 in the Northwest Territories. None of the outstanding tickets remaining to
be cashed are from Alberta, the Yukon or Nunavut. Over 70% of the unclaimed
prizes are $2 EXTRA prizes, but there are also some $10 EXTRA prizes, some $20
MILLIONAIRE LIFE prizes and two $100 EXTRA prizes. The prizes yet to be
claimed on the 416 tickets total $2,998.
A second MILLIONAIRE LIFE validation incident occurred on the Ticket
Terminal between 10:25 a.m. CT/9:25 a.m. MT and 10:52 a.m. CT/9:52 a.m. MT the
morning after the draw. Validation information for MILLIONAIRE LIFE Selections
and EXTRA Selections on MILLIONAIRE LIFE tickets should have been added to the
Terminal at the same time, but they were added 27 minutes apart. As a result,
players who won prizes on both the MILLIONAIRE LIFE and EXTRA games and
validated their tickets during this 27 minute period subsequently received
only their EXTRA prize. Thirty-four (34) tickets in total were affected and
each is entitled to an additional $20 on MILLIONAIRE LIFE. Fifteen (15) of the
tickets were validated in Alberta; 10 in Saskatchewan; 7 in Manitoba and 2 in
the Yukon. The prizes involved total $680.
WCLC will be placing notices on their website, and in major daily
newspapers, advising players who may have been affected by the encashment
problems to call 1-800-531-4097. The Corporation has run computer reports over
the last several days to isolate and identify the exact transactions that were
impacted. Players who call the special number will be sent a form to complete
with their encashment location and time and the information received will be
compared to the tickets remaining to be cashed.
WCLC has operated lottery games in the Prairies and Territories since
1974. While errors such as these are extremely rare, they are taken seriously
with the goals to resolve them in a fair manner and prevent further
The Corporation extends its apologies to consumers who were
inconvenienced by either of the incidents.
