OTTAWA, March 10 /CNW Telbec/ - Benoît Mercier, a teacher from Ecole
secondaire catholique Jean-Vanier in Welland, has been given a two-year
mandate as president of the Provincial Executive Committee of the Association
des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO).
Mr. Mercier was elected to this position today by the 170 delegates at
the Franco-Ontarian teachers' 2008 Policy Convention underway at the Château
Laurier Hotel in Ottawa.
A teacher with 22 years of experience in the profession, Mr. Mercier has
been actively involved in his professional association for almost 20 years. He
served as full-time president of AEFO's Catholic South-Central Unit for
several years, and has been a member of AEFO's Provincial Council since 1998.
He is currently Vice-president of the Provincial Executive Committee to which
he was first elected in 2002.
"One of my priorities will be to follow up on AEFO's recently released
survey which shows that working conditions are less than ideal for school
personnel, says Mr. Mercier. We must work with school boards and the Ministry
of Education to improve the situation in order to retain teachers in our
schools and also offer students a better learning environment."
AEFO represents some 9,000 teachers and other educational workers who
work in Ontario's French-language elementary and secondary schools as well as
workers in other French-language establishments in Ontario.
