Retailer celebrates with customers and stakeholders its wider commitment
to sustainability across its business
MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 20 /CNW/ - As a symbolic gesture of its wider
commitment to sustainability every day, Walmart Canada will reduce its store
lighting day-long for Earth Day and hold local sustainability events. Nearly
all of the company's 312 stores, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, will
reduce their sales floor lighting by two-thirds and hold local sustainability
events, from community clean-ups to tree planting ceremonies.
"Every day, but especially on Earth Day, we're promoting sustainability
in our stores to the more than one million customers who walk through our
doors daily," said Jim Thompson, senior vice president of operations and
merchandising for Walmart Canada. "By cutting our lights and giving prominence
to environmentally preferable products, we're encouraging our customers and
other businesses to adopt more sustainable mindsets and practices."
This is the second year that Walmart Canada has reduced its lighting
day-long in celebration of Earth Day. The company also reduced its lighting
day-long earlier this spring in support of Earth Hour. Since 2005, the company
has reduced its sales floor lighting summer-long, in all but a few stores
nationwide, saving energy and reducing the load on the power grid during peak
"Earth Day provides a great stage to promote action among our customers,
associates and stakeholders, and to demonstrate our continued commitment to
sustainability in every area of our business, from the energy we use to the
products we carry on our shelves," said Thompson.
Since 2005, Walmart has been actively working towards three long-term
sustainability goals globally and in Canada:
1. To produce zero waste;
2. To be powered 100 per cent by renewable energy; and,
3. To make more environmentally preferable products available to
