Wal-Mart Canada Halloween sales up nearly 10% over last year

Top trends for Halloween 2007 include Halloween pet costumes, décor and
    party planning

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 23 /CNW/ - With the Halloween seasonal category up
nearly 10 per cent, Wal-Mart Canada today released its top Halloween trends as
adults, children and even family pets show increased enthusiasm for the
upcoming holiday. The trends underline the popularity of Halloween traditions,
including dressing up, decorating, trick-or-treating for candies, and themed
Halloween is Wal-Mart Canada's number-two holiday for home décor and
party planning (behind Christmas) and the fourth-busiest shopping time of the
year (behind Christmas, back-to-school and Mother's Day). This year, Canadians
are expected to spend more than $1 billion on candy, pumpkins, costumes,
decorations, cards and related Halloween paraphernalia.

Wal-Mart Canada sales data suggests the following:
    - Halloween is about family, including pets. Ontarian pet owners lead
the pack in pet costume sales.
    - This year boys will be transformed into superheroes.
    - To decorate their houses, inflatable Halloween designs are most
popular with Nova Scotians and Newfoundlanders, while Canadians on
the West Coast prefer to decorate to create haunted houses.
    - Albertans, above all other Canadians, will be hosting Halloween

The popularity of Halloween among adults continues to grow, according to
company sales data. Wal-Mart Canada's adult costume sales have shown
double-digit growth over last year, with the biggest increases coming from
plus-size costume sales. This year's top Halloween costume choices for men are
zombie, pirate and beer keg man. Women have shown a preference for pumpkin
girl, pirate, and fairy costumes. As for children, boys will be sporting
costumes of their favourite superheroes from Spiderman to Batman, and, once
again, girls will be transformed into princesses of all types.
New to Wal-Mart's costume assortment are princess costumes with fiber
optic twinkle skirt and tiara that provide additional sparkle and safety.

    Howling Halloween Costumes

Family dogs are getting into the Halloween spirit in record numbers.
Compared to 2006, sales of pet costumes are up more than ten times at Wal-Mart
Canada. Recognizing this growing trend, Wal-Mart now boasts one of the largest
assortments of Halloween costumes for dogs. Pampered pooches have the choice
of dressing up as Tinkerbell, Snow White and Cinderella, Jack Sparrow,
Spiderman, Power Range, Donald Duck and Pooh designs.

Canadians will be decorating their homes to reflect the scariest night of
the year. Inside the home, indoor lights shaped like skulls, pumpkins and
ghosts add festive glow. Outside the house, Canadians are decorating with lit
jack-o-lanterns and inflatable décor, animated zombies and skeletons that are
sound and motion activated.

"Halloween is our number one season for confectionery sales and mini
chocolate bars remain the perennial favourite," said Pat Whitehall, Wal-Mart
Canada's candy buyer. "This year we expect to sell millions of pounds of
candy, including chocolates, gums and chewy treats."

Wal-Mart Canada offers a one-stop shop for Halloween hosts. At Wal-Mart
stores, party planners can purchase necessities from decorative plates and
Halloween accessories to food and Halloween treats.
