Vote for Climate Lays Out Advice for Strategic Voters

    -- strategic voting recommendations would build a progressive minority

    VANCOUVER, Oct. 3 /CNW/ - After two weeks of consultation with voters and
a review of races across the country, Vote For Climate has released voting
recommendations for 80 key ridings. All the recommendations can be seen at

    "We have been astounded by the growing support for strategic voting
across the country by individuals and groups" said Kevin Washbrook, Vote for
Climate spokesperson. "Whether they are worried about global warming or a host
of other issues, there is a real enthusiasm among voters for working together
to elect a progressive minority government on October 14th."

    "Our impression is that for a wide swath of pragmatic voters, it's not a
question of supporting one party or another," said Washbrook. "The question is
'Who is best situated in my riding to defeat the Conservative candidate?'
We're hearing from a lot of people who want straight advice, and who want to
build a coalition government that will get to work on the issues they care

    Some prominent recommendations include:

    Saanich Gulf Islands: Liberal candidate Briony Penn replacing
    Conservative cabinet minister Gary Lunn;

    Edmonton Strathcona: NDP candidate Linda Duncan replacing
    Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer;

    Saskatoon/Rosetown/Biggar: NDP candidate Nettie Wiebe, to take the seat
    vacated by Conservative Carole Skelton;

    Winnipeg South: Liberal candidate John Lowen to replace Conservative MP
    Rod Bruinooge;

    Oshawa: NDP candidate Mike Shields to oust Conservative MP Colin Carrie;

    Louis Hebért: Bloc candidate Pascal-Pierre Paillé to replace Conservative
    Luc Harvey; and

    Tobique Mactaquac: Liberal candidate Sally McGrath to take the seat held
    by Conservative Mike Allen.

    The campaign recommends Green Party candidates in two ridings, West
Vancouver and Central Nova, but elsewhere encourages Green supporters to vote
strategically for the candidate most likely to defeat the Conservatives. "The
argument boils down like this," says Washbrook. "If you want to elect a
government that will start working hard to fight global warming, help defeat
the Conservatives by voting strategically. If you want to support the Green
Party, work for electoral reform in Canada, swap your vote this election, and
donate money to the Green Party directly."

    Vote for Climate is a grassroots, volunteer effort that encourages voters
to organise at the local level to encourage strategic voting to elect a
"climate-friendly" government.
