VisionTV contest invites viewers to help program the network



    TORONTO, July 6 /CNW/ - Ever wonder how TV networks choose programs?
Think you could do better? A new summer promotion from VisionTV gives viewers
a shot at picking the network's next hit.
    VisionTV's "So You Wanna Be in TV" contest, launching today, invites
Canadians to offer their program suggestions for the chance to win a $1,000
shopping spree at their favourite electronics retailer.
    The contest, which the network is promoting on-air and on its Web site,
closes on August 7. For full details, please visit www.visiontv.ca.
    Visitors to the contest page will be asked to fill out a questionnaire to
qualify for the final draw. The questions solicit their feedback on VisionTV's
current offerings, and on prospective programming options.
    Viewers are asked in particular about VisionTV's high-rated British
comedy block, airing weeknights from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET. They are invited to
weigh in on a number of titles currently under consideration - including
classics such as The Good Life, The League of Gentlemen and Two's Company -
and to suggest other possibilities.
    The top vote-getters are expected to begin airing on VisionTV as early as
mid-autumn.
    Elsewhere, the questionnaire asks: "If you were in charge of VisionTV,
what shows would you put on the schedule?"
    Said Bill Roberts, President and CEO of VisionTV: "We thought this would
be a fun way to engage with the loyal fans of our most popular programming
block. We want to deepen their sense of ownership by giving them a real say in
our future program choices. And, of course, we value any opportunity to learn
more about our viewers' interests and preferences."
    The popularity of the Britcom block is responsible, in part, for
VisionTV's recent ratings growth. The channel's prime time audience share in
2008-2009 has increased approximately 50% over the previous season. VisionTV's
30-minute weekly audience reach has averaged one million-plus since the start
of this season.
