Vincor Canada partners with local greenhouse in Niagara to turn grape pomace into clean power

    - Vincor to supply grape pomace from its three Niagara wineries to
Vandermeer Greenhouse to convert into electric power; surplus to be
        sold to Ontario Hydro -

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON, Sept. 25 /CNW/ - Vincor Canada, the largest
Canadian producer and marketer of wine and related products, is pleased to
announce its partnership with Vandermeer Greenhouses ("Vandermeer") to create
clean electricity from grape pomace - comprised of grape skin, pulp and seeds,
which are leftover from the winemaking process.
"Having the grape pomace from our three major Niagara-area wineries
utilized to generate clean energy is not only a win for the environment, it
will result in significant cost savings for Vincor," said Jay Wright,
President and Chief Executive Officer of Vincor Canada. "Under this
partnership, as much as 3,500 tonnes of natural waste per year will be
converted to clean, green electrical energy."
Using a process known as anaerobic digestion, which breaks down organic
matter in an oxygen free environment, Vandermeer will capture the methane gas
that is produced by the decomposition of grape pomace and use the gas to
generate electricity to power and heat Vandermeer's greenhouse operations. Any
surplus electricity generated will be sold to Ontario Hydro grid to generate
power for homes in the region. Participating wineries include Jackson-Triggs,
Inniskillin Niagara-on the-Lake, and Vincor Niagara Cellars, Niagara Falls.
