Veridian wins award for promotion of conservation program

Electric utility recognized for high increase in peaksaver® sign-ups

AJAX, ON, Jan. 11 /CNW/ - Veridian Connections has been recognized as the winner of the 2010 PeakBuster Utility Challenge for having the largest percentage increase of households participating in the peaksaver® conservation program. Over a six-month period, the company increased customer participation by 25.23 per cent - the highest percentage increase recorded by Ontario's large electric utilities.

Veridian was one of 47 electric utilities identified by the Ontario Clean Air Alliance in the organization's annual challenge - a competition that recognizes utilities that achieved the largest percentage increase in peaksaver installations within their service territories between April 1 and September 30, 2010. Complete results can be viewed online at www.peakbusters.ca/utility.php.

"We are thrilled to be recognized for the success of our peaksaver program," said Eryn Wishnowski, Veridian's residential conservation program manager. "The award demonstrates that our customers are committed to reducing the strain on the electricity system during peak periods of demand, and to helping build a culture of conservation."

Many participating customers signed-up for the program during Veridian's annual 'Sign Up & Save' Summer Tour. Held between June and August, the 12 week tour includes stops at events and festivals in all communities serviced by Veridian. The tour provides customers the opportunity to learn valuable information about energy conservation initiatives, and an opportunity to sign-up for the peaksaver program.

peaksaver is an innovative program that helps to ensure a reliable power supply in the province. The program allows a participating customer's air conditioner to be cycled down when electricity demand is at its highest through a programmable thermostat installed at their home. The program is available to customers with central air conditioning in good working order. Participants receive a free, professionally-installed Honeywell programmable thermostat ($300 value) and a $25 'thank you' payment.

The PeakBuster Utility Challenge concludes a remarkable year for Veridian. The company was named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2010, it was the recipient of the 'ENERGY STAR Utility of the Year - Regional' award, and its 200-plus employees celebrated 2.5 million hours worked without a lost-time injury, among many other accomplishments.
