Vancouver 2010 to post daily simulated weather/sport program reports to

VANCOUVER, Feb. 13 /CNW/ - One of the single largest factors that will
influence the actual staging of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
will be the weather. And the two-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Games
offers an ideal chance for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the
2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) to prepare for 2010 by
forecasting and simulating the weather's impact. VANOC can also use this
information to inform the public on how much of a factor weather can be and
what must be done, from a preparation perspective.
Beginning today at, Thinking Weather reports, daily
simulated weather/sport reports, will look at the weather forecasts and actual
weather of the previous day and how it would have impacted the events taking
place on that same day in 2010. The report will look at many areas of the
Games that could be impacted by weather, including facility operations, the
event schedule and spectator experience.
"This simulating process is one of the tools we are using to help us
prepare for Games-time operations and plan how different types of weather will
impact the way we stage events," said Cathy Priestner Allinger, VANOC
executive vice president of Sport and Game Operations. "This will help our
team prepare for what is ahead and will help us build different scenarios for
2010 with the goal of ensuring the spectator experience is first class."
The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games (VANOC), in collaboration with Environment Canada's forecasting
services, has monitored weather in the Games competition venues as early as
the Bid phase. The information has assisted VANOC in the development of
operational plans, sports schedules and contingency planning.
The reports will be posted daily throughout the Games period at concluding March 22, one day following the end of the
Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. From the homepage navigate to
'Organizing Committee', 'Public Communications' and 'Reports'.

VANOC is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging
of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. The
2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler from
February 12 to 28, 2010. Vancouver and Whistler will host the Paralympic
Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010.
