U.S. Election Inspires "Party-Perfect" Cocktails

TORONTO, Oct. 30 /CNW/ - While the Canadian election came and went with
little fanfare south of the border, the U.S. election is firing up debate in
homes and offices across our country. Republican or Democratic, voters agree
the best parties - political or otherwise - have the best cocktails. Consider
these crowd favourites concocted with the personality of today's political
figures in mind:

    The Sarah "So-Last-Season" Palin-tini

Despite her new $150,000 wardrobe and polished up beauty queen image,
Palin has gotten in touch with her inner pitbull and is now biting the very
hand that pulled her from sweat pants, a hockey jacket and relative obscurity.
Trying to leapfrog over McCain for the top position, even though Alaska, the
State she governs is backing Obama, is just a little too ambitious. Even with
Tina Fey's help. Et tu Bruté?

    Her drink:
1 1/2 oz Pearl Pomegranate Vodka
    2 oz bitter lemonade
Lots of ice (just like home)

    McCain Hurricane

Ok it's a stretch...but this Top Gun has navigated worse natural
disasters than Ms. Palin and has earned the respect of war veterans and civic
-minded Americans. But at 72, how much mettle has McCain retained from his
days of aviation combat? Or perhaps this experience has taught him how to
dodge bullets...Sarah take note.

    His drink:
    1 1/2 oz. Pearl(R) Pomegranate Flavored Vodka
Fill with your favourite energy drink
Fill glass half way. This Hurricane has some catching up to do.

    Obama Slamma

This Democrat is slamming the polls, the opposition and is dragging the
U.S. to its defining moment as a nation. Smart, self-effacing and with two
young children, this dad-slash-presidential candidate is making history,
forcing voters to hear and see in full colour.

    His drink:
1/2 oz. Pearl(R) Pomegranate Flavored Vodka
    1/2 oz. Gin
    1/2 oz. Light Rum
    1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1 oz. Sweet & Sour Mix
    Splash of Pomegranate Juice
    Fill with Cola

Joe Biden (The Blue Collar Holla!)

Not to be mistaken for Joe the Plumber, Biden was actually named as
running mate to Obama. We just haven't heard much about him lately. Known to
be respected by blue collar America, Joe Biden is consistently ranked as one
of the least wealthy members of Senate. With the economy as it is, Biden
should feel right at home in the U.S.

    His drink:
2 oz Salvador's Original Margarita (foolproof - the tequila's already in
it and one of the best values on the market)
    1 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
    1 oz fresh lime juice
Rub rim of cocktail glass with lime juice. Dip rim in coarse salt. Shake
Salvador's, Blue Curacao, and lime juice with ice, strain into the salt-
     rimmed glass, and serve.

    Cuppa Joe the Plumber

Not to be mistaken for Joe Biden, this is the media-anointed sidekick
McCain wished he had picked... Joe is easy on the eyes, straight-forward with
his demands and offers a great sound byte. Comes with overalls - no new
designer wardrobe requirements. We're thinking Tidy Bowl blue with this one.

    His drink:
    2 oz Pearl Pomegranate Vodka
    1 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
Shake Vodka, Blue Curacao and ice in a shaker. Heck, feel free to drink
     out of the shaker.

Other cocktails such as the Harper Haze, the Clinton Highball Breaker or
the Dion Slurper (non-alcohol) are all available using your imagination and
quality products available at the LCBO. Enjoy a signature cocktail over the
U.S. presidential elections November 4, 2008. Pearl Pomegranate Vodka retails
for $27.75 and is available at most LCBO stores. Salvador's Original Margarita
(1.5 litre bottle at $20.50) can be found in the One Pour Cocktail section at
the LCBO.
