U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports - Letter to the Editor

    OTTAWA, Jan. 17 /CNW Telbec/ -

    January 17, 2008

    Letter to the Editor:

The U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports plans to continue its review
of the Community Development Trust initiative announced by the Prime Minister
Stephen Harper to ensure that it is not designed as government support for
Canadian lumber companies.

Any government subsidies to Canadian lumber companies, no matter how they
are fashioned, are in violation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement negotiated
and signed by both the Canadian and U.S. governments in 2006.

The North American lumber market is going through unprecedented
difficulties. Lumber workers, and their communities, on both sides of the
border are struggling.

The Coalition simply wants to ensure that government aid is going to
workers in this industry for retraining. U.S. lumber companies continue to
operate in an open-market system that does not offer taxpayer-funded aid and
access to provincially subsidized timber prices.

Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, Washington DC
