Urban Housing Starts Surge in July

ST. JOHN'S, NL, Aug. 9 /CNW/ - Urban housing starts surged in July,
according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation (CMHC). For the month of July, total housing starts jumped 25 per
cent, with 202 posted across provincial urban centres compared to 161 a year
ago. This hefty increase was second only to Saskatchewan in Canada. Of the
202 starts, 184 were recorded within the St. John's region compared to 135
last July, an increase of 36 per cent. To date, urban housing starts total
825, up seven per cent.
"July's surge in housing starts was largely attributed to a notable 39
per cent increase in the single-detached segment of the market," said Chris
Janes, Senior Market Analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "With
solid economic and demographic fundamentals, single-detached housing starts
have been trending higher since April, boosting overall year-to-date starts
activity accordingly," added Janes.
For Canada's urban centres, total housing starts dropped 12 per cent to
16,921 in July over July of 2006. Single-detached starts shed three per cent
to 8,919 while multiple starts of 8,002 represent a 21 per cent decrease
compared to last July. In Atlantic Canada, there were 892 urban housing
starts, down 12 per cent over the same month last year.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation conducts a monthly survey of
housing construction in urban centres of Canada with a population of 50,000
and over.
