BURLINGTON, ON, Aug. 25 /CNW/ - Family members and fellow Firefighters
continue to mourn the sudden loss of Burlington Firefighter Wayne Topping who
passed away at an international Fire Extrication event held in Indianapolis,
Indiana. Firefighter Topping collapsed with vital signs absent after
completing a scenario with his teammates who were representing the Burlington
Fire Department at the symposium. Members of the Burlington Fire Department
and the Burlington Professional Firefighters remain in constant contact with
the family and have worked together to determine that Wayne will be given a
full fire department funeral.
Burlington Fire Chief Steve Thurlow said, "The family and our department
feel that a funeral with full fire service honours will be a fitting tribute
to a dedicated professional." As a member of the Burlington Fire Department
Auto Extrication Team for two years, Wayne has been recognized twice with an
award for Best Medic.
Arrangements are currently being finalized to bring Firefighter Topping
and the other members of the Burlington Fire Department back to Ontario on
Sunday August 26th. Initial plans have been made to have the funeral at 1:00
p.m. on Thursday August 30th however, final details will be provided as they
Wayne was married and had two sons and one stepson. Originally, from St.
Thomas, Ontario he moved to Burlington several years ago. Wayne joined the
Burlington Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in January 1998 and
became a full-time firefighter in May 2000.
