Update No. 1 Loss of Burlington Firefighter

BURLINGTON, ON, Aug. 25 /CNW/ - It was with great sadness that the City
of Burlington announced earlier today that Burlington Firefighter
Wayne Topping had passed away at an international Fire Extrication event held
in Indianapolis, Indiana. Firefighter Topping suddenly collapsed with vital
signs absent after completing a scenario with his teammates.
Members of the Burlington Fire Department and the Burlington Professional
Firefighters are working closely with the family to provide support and to
assist them through this difficult time. Further information will be provided
to the media when final decisions are made relative to the funeral
arrangements.
Wayne was married and had two sons and one stepson. Originally, from
St. Thomas, Ontario, he moved to Burlington several years ago.
As a member of the Burlington Fire Department Auto Extrication Team for
two years, Wayne has been recognized twice with an award for Best Medic. This
is only a small example of the skills and compassion he brought to his
profession.
Deputy Chief Mark Melenbacher is in Indianapolis with the other members
of the team and explained earlier this evening that the support being provided
by other fire departments at the extrication event has been overwhelming.

The Burlington Fire Department would like to thank the media for the
expressions of support that have been made at this difficult time. We will
continue to provide information as it becomes available.
