TORONTO, Jan. 20 /CNW/ - Five investigators and two forensic
investigators from the SIU continue to probe an incident this morning in
Brantford involving the Brantford Police Service (BPS).
The BPS contacted the SIU at 4:22 a.m. today. The BPS advised the SIU
that earlier this morning officers of the BPS were interacting with a man in
the area of the Brantford Casino. The man fled the police and made his way out
onto the ice surface of the Grand River. A short time later the man was seen
going through the ice.
At noon today the body of a male was recovered from the Grand River.
Investigators are in the process of confirming the identity of this male. No
name will be released pending notification of next of kin.
The chief coroner has been notified and a post mortem examination has
been scheduled tomorrow in Hamilton.
The SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and six officers
as witness officers.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
