Toshiba's New Ultra-Portable Notebook Features World's First 128GB Solid State Drive

Portégé R500 series boasts four world's first technologies including
7mm Integrated DVD SuperMulti Drive and Energy Efficiency

MARKHAM, ON, June 18 /CNW/ - Toshiba of Canada Information Systems Group
(Toshiba ISG) announces the launch of the Portégé R500-SP209C featuring the
world's first 128 gigabyte solid state drive (SSD) for extended performance,
reinforcing Toshiba's leading quality, innovation and design.
"The SSD technology provides customers with an enhanced level of
reliability, durability and system responsiveness and is the crowning
achievement of the Portégé R500 series," said Jerome Kudera, Toshiba of
Canada. "We're proud to reveal that Toshiba of Canada has had zero reported
failures in any solid state drives found in the R500 -SP109C, which launched a
year ago."

The Toshiba's Portégé R500-SP209C is the newest model in the esteemed
Portégé R500 series, delivering four world's first technologies and 'green'
attributes including:

    - First notebook computer with 128GB solid state drive
Utilizing the industry's largest solid state drive capacity of 128GB,
the Portégé R500-SP209C provides ample storage space for carrying
critical company data and sensitive personal information while
traveling, and much faster operating system start up.

    - First notebook computer with transreflective LED display
Adding to its versatility, the world's first widescreen 12.1-inch
transreflective LED backlit display is ideal for usage in virtually
any type of light condition. The transreflective screen lets the
sun's light pass through and reflects it out to bring the images on
the display to life so users can switch the LED backlighting off
while outdoors and decrease overall battery consumption.

    - First notebook with 7mm DVD SuperMulti drive
The unit features a built-in 7mm DVD SuperMulti drive that eliminates
the bulk and inconvenience of carrying additional drives and cables
and reduces the travel weight by providing users with an all-in-one

    - Longest battery operating times
Users can expand their mobile computing boundaries beyond their
office, home or local coffee shop and can utilize a full work day of
normal computing on a single charge. To achieve extended computing
life, Toshiba subjects all system components to meticulous energy
        efficiency evaluation.

    - EPEAT Gold-rating

EPEAT is a system where manufacturers declare their products'
conformance to a comprehensive set of environmental criteria in eight
environmental performance categories. The Portégé R500 has claimed
the top rating as the number one EPEAT Gold compliant notebook.

    - Energy Star 4.0 compliance
The international ENERGY STAR symbol is a simple way for consumers to
identify products that are among the most energy-efficient on the
market. The Portégé R500 series meets the stringent 4.0 requirements
because of its highly efficient power supply that can save up to
130 kWh of electricity and prevent up to 200 pounds of green house
        gas emissions.

The Portégé R500-SP209C runs on Intel Core 2 Duo Core Processor U7600 for
superior processing speed and packs an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950,
1GB DDR2 memory and comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Business. The
notebook features Toshiba's proprietary High Density Mounting Technology
process to enable dual-sided motherboard component mounting and measures as
thin as 0.77-inches. This innovative technology produces a motherboard that is
as little as one-third the size of a mainstream 15.4-inch notebook's
motherboard, while still providing users the same functionality. Extending far
beyond standard notebook mobility and performance, the unit is available for
the suggested list price of $3299.
The new Portégé R500 also incorporates Toshiba's third-generation
EasyGuard(TM) Technology with more reliable and secure computing capabilities.
EasyGuard Technology features found on the Portégé R500 Series include HDD
protection, shock protected chassis and spill resistant keyboard.
All Toshiba notebook computers are RoHS compliant and conform to
stringent international environmental standards to effectively reduce the
environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other
hazardous substances. Toshiba also offers a proactive environmental program to
ensure that PC hardware and any associated components that pose environmental
risks will be collected, dismantled and safely disposed of, regardless of the
manufacturer. Any Canadian resident with unwanted or outdated PC components
can alert Toshiba that they're ready to safely dispose of their hardware by
