TORONTO, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Local cyclist, Peter Oyler, who recently
completed the 2007 Race Across America (RAAM) in support of Kids Help Phone
visited the charity's Toronto office today to present a cheque for $50,000.
"On behalf of Kids Help Phone, I want to thank Peter for his generous
support and congratulate him on completing the Race Across America," says Tom
McAllister, President & CEO, Kids Help Phone. "The dollars Peter has raised as
part of this endeavor will play a vital role in our ability to be there for
kids 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
In 2006, Kids Help Phone helped kids from almost 3,000 Canadian
communities more than 1.5 million times by phone and online. But demand for
the service continues to grow, particularly online, and Kids Help Phone must
sometimes close their online "Ask a Counsellor" service temporarily in order
to catch up on the web posts. The money raised by Mr. Oyler as part of the
RAAM will go toward helping Kids Help Phone's online service keep with demand.
"As I set out on this personal goal of mine, I felt it was important to
help others in the process," comments Oyler. "When kids need help, I want to
ensure that someone is there to help them so that one day they too can chase
after their dreams the same way I have."
Oyler is one of only 161 people to ever complete the race in its 25-year
history. Finishing in 8th place, Oyler became the top-ranked Canadian to
compete and 2nd ranked rider from North America.
RAAM is the ultimate test of endurance, strength and will. By the end of
the race, solo rider, Oyler, had pedaled 3,150 miles (5,069.4 km) and climbed
over 100,000 feet in his effort to raise awareness and money for Kids Help
Phone. For more information about Peter's quest or to make a donation to Kids
