Top500 - The most powerful supercomputer in Canada at Université de Sherbrooke

SHERBROOKE, QC, Nov. 15, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - According to the international ranking Top500 supercomputers published yesterday, the Université de Sherbrooke hosts the most powerful computer in Canada, and the 41st most powerful in the world. Called "Mammouth" (French for "Mammoth"), it has the combined memory and speed of approximately 20,000 top of the line personal computers. This supercomputer will perform scientific calculations on a scale never seen before in this country.

With Mammouth, scientists from several Canadian universities will perform numerical simulations essential to their research in various branches of Engineering, Science, Medicine, and even in branches traditionally less involved in scientific computing, such as Economics and Linguistics.

Mammouth consists of 1,630 servers with a total of 39,648 AMD processors (cores), 57,600 gigabytes of RAM and a data storage capacity of 500,000 gigabytes. It can carry 240,000 billion arithmetic operations per second while executing a single program.

Sherbrooke has hosted the most powerful supercomputer in Canada in previous years: 1995, 2000, and from 2005 to 2008. Mammouth is funded mostly by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Quebec Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade. Other contributions came from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Mammouth is part of the national High Performance Computing platform coordinated by Compute Canada, which allows all Canadian researchers, regardless of their home institution, to access cutting edge computing resources. Operating costs for Mammouth and user support for researchers are paid by Université de Sherbrooke, NSERC, the Fonds de recherche Nature et technologies Québec and Nano-Québec. These funds were obtained by Compute Canada and Calcul Québec.
