TICO: "Working Round The Clock" To Bail Out Travellers Affected by Conquest Closure

Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) President & CEO Michael Pepper this
afternoon (17APR09) about the ongoing issues vacationers are facing in
southern destination resorts due to the closure of Conquest Vacations.
    TakeOffeh.com captures revealing information in the audio interview
regarding the issue of Conquest vacationers being pressed to pay local hotels
directly in southern destinations.
    According to Mr. Pepper, the council has been working round the clock
sending payments to southern destination resorts who have been demanding that
guests booked through Conquest Vacations pay their hotels directly despite
having paid for their vacations in full prior to leaving Canada.
    Ontario travellers who have been affected should now be able to check-out
of hotels without having to pay the hotels local charges directly for their
    According to the Mexico Tourism Board, hotels in Cancun alone are owed
approximately $10 million dollars by Conquest Vacations.
    The issue raises the question of how the travel industry has been
operating on credit with resorts. Pepper indicates that the business model
must be addressed in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Tour
Operators, the Department of External Affairs and the various tourism bodies
in the resort areas to ensure this type of situation does not reoccur.
