Thermablades earn rave reviews in Swedish Elite League

LHC defenceman Johan Fransson cites performance benefits,
three teammates will also begin wearing heated skate blades

TORONTO, March 7 /CNW/ - Swedish Elite League defenceman Johan Fransson,
who was a top draft pick of the NHL's Dallas Stars in the 2004 draft, says he
is impressed with the performance edge delivered by Thermablade heated skate
blades and will continue using them during games in Sweden's top pro league,
Therma Blade Inc. announced today.
Fransson, a member of Linkopings Hockey Club (LHC) in the 12-team Swedish
Elite League (Elitserien), recently told the Swedish sports media that
Thermablades are clearly providing him with a new performance advantage during
"Of course I'm satisfied and I want to keep the heated skate blades -
they definitely add a certain performance effect," Fransson told the Swedish
media following a recent win over the Frolunda Indians in which Fransson
scored a goal. "I probably haven't scored a better looking goal in the
professional league than I did today. I give all the credit to my skates -
they are the best. The heated skate blades don't cut as much into the ice,
which makes me feel that I'm going faster."
Fransson, who was drafted in the second round of the 2004 draft, 34th
overall, by Dallas and whose rights were acquired by the NHL's Los Angeles
Kings last year, is the first player to wear Thermablades in Sweden's top pro
league, which is generally ranked as one of the top leagues in Europe
alongside elite pro leagues in the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and
Three of Fransson's LHC teammates have also started using Thermablades in
Swedish Elite League action. They are Patrik Zackrisson (San Jose Sharks draft
pick), Mattias Weinhandl (New York Islanders draft pick) and Tony Martensson
(Anaheim Ducks draft). Martensson was a member of Sweden's gold medal team at
the 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships in Latvia.
"We are excited about how well Thermablades are gaining early acceptance
in Sweden's top pro league and we will be getting more blades over to Europe
as interest grows among the Swedish Elite League's players and teams," said
Sam McCoubrey, VP of Sales and Marketing for Quebec-based Therma Blade Inc.
The arrival of Thermablades in Sweden's top pro league comes while Therma
Blade Inc. continues testing its heated blades in the NHL with some of the
50 players and 21 NHL teams that have expressed interest in obtaining the
revolutionary heated blades.
"The momentum is building here in North America and now in Europe as more
professional players get an opportunity to try Thermablades," McCoubrey said.
"Beyond Sweden, a number of elite players in other European countries are also
trying our blades in practices and games and we expect more good feedback in
coming weeks."
Thermablade heated blades are designed to maintain a consistent
temperature of approximately 5 degrees C using a small battery and a
microprocessor stored within each skate blade holder. The warm blade acts to
increase the thickness of the water layer between the blade and the ice
surface, dramatically reducing gliding friction and starting resistance for
The reduced friction allows players to reach top speed faster and to
skate using less energy. Physiological benefits include a reduction in heart
rate, increased stamina and less fatigue over the course of a hockey game.

Thermablades will be available in specialty sports stores in Canada and
the U.S. at a suggested price of $399.99.

Canadian skate blade maker Therma Blade Inc. is a Quebec-based
manufacturer of heated skate blade technology, the concept was thought of by
Alberta resident Tory Weber. Thermablade is a technologically advanced skate
blade that uses battery powered electrical energy to slightly heat the skate
blade, thereby increasing the layer of water between the blade and the ice
surface and reducing friction at the ice surface. Thermablade has several
proven physiological and performance benefits for hockey players, including a
dramatic reduction in gliding friction and starting resistance, an overall
increase in stamina and an overall decrease in fatigue. More information on
