    30,000 music-lovers rock out at Fort Calgary this weekend

    CALGARY, June 21 /CNW/ - After months of buzz, kicked off by a visit from
Sir Richard Branson himself, Calgary's first-ever Virgin Festival launched
today. The hottest music event of the year is big time: 30 artists including
international superstars and emerging Canadian talent, two stages and more
than 30,000 fans will rock out to a supersonic mix of music, ranging from alt
punk to hip-hop to good ol' rock n' roll.
    "Virgin Festival is an all-around blast and it's always extra exciting to
launch in a new city for the very first time," says Nathan Rosenberg, chief
marketing officer, Virgin Canada. "The feedback from music lovers in Calgary
has been huge from the moment we announced the Festival, and we've got a
jam-packed weekend in store for them. Calgary won't know what's hit it once
we're done."
    Saturday's acts will start the Festival with a bang, featuring headliners
alt-rockers Stone Temple Pilots, three-time Grammy Award winners The Flaming
Lips, Brit award winners The Fratellis and X92.9 Xposure winner Kilbourne,
plus many more. On the TD Canada Trust Music Stage, fans can catch awesome
acts like Hey Ocean and The Dudes, plus X92.9 Xposure winners The Secret
Broadcast, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and The Fast Romantics. On Sunday,
headliners The Tragically Hip and Canadian alt-rock artist Matthew Good will
rock the Virgin Mobile stage. The TD Canada Trust Music Stage will feature The
New Pornographers, Ladyhawk, Said The Whale, plus lots more.
    "We've pulled together an incredible line-up and a huge range of crazy
experiences fans won't be expecting," says Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin

something for everyone. From rock, country, electro pop and hip-hop, Virgin

    Let's crunch some numbers

    With so much going down at Virgin Festival, it's hard to keep track of it
all! Here are a few key stats to keep in mind while checking out the festival:

    30,000  The number of festival-goers expected over the two days. Awesome.

    2,000   Kilometres of recycled toilet paper will be used at Virgin
            Festival. That's enough to lay out a road of toilet paper from
            Toronto to Los Angeles, California.

    200     Tonnes of material used to construct the stages. Heavy.

    50      Kilometres of cable will be used to wire up the stage. That's
            enough to run cable up the Calgary Tower building 260 times!

    2000    The number of guitar picks the bands will go through at the

are ganging up to create an experience music lovers have never seen before.

    Virgin cares

    Virgin Mobile's Virgin Festivals (Calgary and Toronto) are expected to
raise more than $100,000 for Virgin Unite this year. This will be made up of
donations from ticket sales and from onsite fundraising.
    Virgin Unite is the independent charitable arm of the Virgin Group,
created to unite people and Virgin's global resources to make a difference.

    Calling on Angels

    Everyone needs a helping hand now and then, and Virgin Mobile Angels will
be on site to make sure that everyone has a great time. If anyone stubs their
toe, can't find the beer tent, or just needs to see a smiling face the Virgin
Mobile Angels will be able to lend a hand to make sure everyone gets taken
care of. Plus the Angels will be armed with Motorola RAZR2 mobile phones to
loan out if people need to make a quick call.

    Bringing some green to the scene

    "Caring for the environment is always a top priority for everything we
do, and being green has been a huge part of all our planning for Virgin
Festival Calgary," says Nathan Rosenberg, chief marketing officer, Virgin
Canada. "We've taken every step to make sure Fort Calgary is left as beautiful
as we found it. More than that, we're looking to really educate and inspire
people on things they can do every day to go green and make a difference in
the fight against climate change."
    Here's how Virgin Festival is keeping their promise to "green it like
they mean it":

    1.  People can visit the ENMAX Green Spot and check out the ENMAX Energy
        Interpretive Centre to learn about alternate energy and find out how
        to get a free treat created with solar-power.

    2.  There will be on-site recycling and composting, including a team of
        Virgin Eco-Angels to help sort through all the recycling.

    3.  If an Eco-Angel spots a fan taking public transit to the Festival,
        they could win a VIP ticket upgrade as a reward.

    4.  Biodegradable cups and containers will be used for all food and

    5.  Signs and other materials are printed on recycled papers.

    6.  Virgin Festival will purchase carbon offsets for any energy that
        needs to be used.

    7.  The Festival has partnered with PickupPal to encourage music lovers
        to meet up and carpool to Fort Calgary.

    8.  Thirsty folks can get a re-useable Virgin Festival cup and fill it up
        as many times as they want at the Watering Hole, instead of using a
        plastic water bottle.

    9.  There will be solar powered computer stations thanks to TD Canada

    10. Virgin Festival encourages garbage picking! The Global Inheritance
        TRASHed :: Recycling Store will give everyone the chance to trade in
        recyclables for cool prizes and other goodies, including tickets to
        some hot concerts courtesy of MuchMusic.

    Ticket news

    Tickets are almost gone, but for those fans that still haven't made their
plans for the weekend, tickets will be available at the gates or at all
