TORONTO, Sept. 6 /CNW/ - The Shock Doctrine, a film by international
bestselling author, Naomi Klein (No Logo) and Oscar(TM) nominated director,
Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) premieres simultaneously at the 2007 Toronto
International Film Festival and the 2007 Venice Film Festival. Originally
created exclusively for online distribution as a companion to Naomi Klein's
new book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, the festival
launch of this six minute short film marks a first for the online world.
Naomi Klein says, "As far as we know, there has never been a film that
started as a web companion for a book and became an artistic work selected by
two of the world's A-list film festivals. So it's unique on that score, a true
marriage of the literary and the cinematic, with simultaneous recognition from
both worlds."
According to Klein, "The central idea of my book, The Shock Doctrine, is
the use of shocks to exploit people, whether individuals in torture cells or
entire societies after disasters. That is such a visual, physical idea that I
knew that a true artist could find ways to take the argument and reach people
on the visceral level of film. I sent the book to Alfonso because I felt that
the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was
seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book
jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists to make The
Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where
everything felt fated."
Alfonso Cuaron adds, "I read the book and realized its importance in
factually exposing what lies behind the economic system that has been globally
imposed and that is so harmful to humanity and the planet. I called Naomi
immediately and told her that I would do everything I could to help the book
get read."
The Shock Doctrine short film will screen at TIFF on September 7th and
9th, and at the Venice Film Festival on September 7th and 8th and will be
released online on September 7th. The international bestselling author of
No Logo, Naomi Klein, will publish her new book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise
of Disaster Capitalism in nine languages simultaneously in September 2007. The
Shock Doctrine hit No. 1 on on its first day of release in Canada on
September 4th.
