The second year of Vivacité Montréal: Over 40% of applicants share $160 000 to carry out 21 artistic projects

    MONTREAL, June 25 /CNW Telbec/ - Over 40% of immigrant and visible
minority applicants who applied for financial assistance during the second
registration period of the Vivacité Montréal program obtained $160 000 in
support to carry out 21 artistic projects.
    Vivacité Montréal stems from a three-year partnership between the Conseil
des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Conférence régionale des élus de
Montréal and has been made possible since the fall of 2007 through the
participation of the Canada Council for the Arts, the ministère de
l'Immigration et des Communautés culturelles, the Fondation du Grand Montréal,
the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Forum jeunesse de l'île de Montréal.
    On behalf of all of the partners, Yvan Gauthier, Chairman and CEO of the
Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, congratulated the grant recipients,
who are contributing through their creation projects to the enrichment and
diversification of Montréal's cultural life.
    A multidisciplinary selection committee made up of peers with a sound
knowledge of artistic conditions in various cultural communities analysed the
49 applications. The committee members were chosen following a consultation of
all of the program's partners, The grants requested in fiscal 2008-2009
totalled $422 610.
    Of the 21 recipients, 80% were born outside Canada and 48% declared a
mother tongue other than French or English. They come from several continents
and regions of the world, i.e. Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central
and South America, and the West Indies. Their average age is 29.

    Vivacité Montréal stems from an agreement that seeks to financially
support professional immigrant and visible minority artists under 35 years of
age in their initial attempts to integrate into and participate in
professional arts and literature milieus and to foster their career
development. This agreement is also intended to recognize their contribution
to Montréal's artistic and cultural life, promote the contribution made by the
up-and-coming generation of professional immigrant and visible minority
artists, and make the artists' work accessible to the public in Montréal. The
next registration deadline is December 1, 2009. The list of grant recipients
