OTTAWA, Sept. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The Public Service Alliance of Canada in
the National Capital Region (PSAC-NCR) will be flying quite high this year
during the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival, where volunteers will be meeting
visitors to talk to them about the importance of maintaining quality public
"We would like to invite the public, and particularly PSAC members, to
come out and meet with us to find out more about our campaign to defend public
services," pointed out Daniel Charron, President of the Conseil régional
d'action politique de l'Outaouais of PSAC.
"Public services, whether at the federal, provincial or even municipal
levels, are constantly under attack by right-wing ideologists," added Maria
Fitzpatrick, the PSAC-NCR Regional Executive Vice-President. "The Conservative
government in Ottawa has taken action which confirms it still believes that
economic progress is achieved by providing reduced service, where those in
need are left to fend for themselves. With the adoption of Bill C-10 where the
government reneged on its signature on numerous collective agreements, while
at the same time depriving workers of the right to fight for pay equity, the
Conservative government has proven its contempt for the Public Service. With
an election campaign looming, we must remind our members and the people of
The PSAC-NCR information table will also provide an opportunity for
citizens in Gatineau to commit to come out and vote during the municipal
elections in November. They will be invited to leave their names with PSAC
volunteers who will phone them a few days prior to the November 1 election to
remind them it is important they exercise their right to vote.
"We have invited federal MPs and provincial MNAs in the Outaouais to come
out and meet our members at the Festival and show that they believe in quality
and universally accessible public services delivered by qualified staff,"
indicated Daniel Charron. "An invitation has also been issued to candidates in
the municipal election to have them come out and explain their vision of
labour relations and how they intend to maintain quality public services for
the people in Gatineau."
PSAC-NCR will have an information table in the "1001 Trouvailles" section
of the Hot Air Balloon Festival from September 4 to 7. Moreover, PSAC members
will participate in the traditional Labour Day Parade on September 7 starting
at 11 a.m. in front of Ottawa City Hall. The float sponsored by Ottawa Area
Council will be based on the theme of Bill C-10 which stamped out the
fundamental rights of workers in the Federal Public Service in the area of pay
equity and collective bargaining.
