OTTAWA, Jan. 26 /CNW/ - The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) today
announced that its President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Gordon R.
Peeling plans to step down as head of the association as of April 30,
"We are deeply appreciative of Gordon's contribution to this
organization. Over the thirteen plus years of his tenure, he has been
instrumental to MAC's success and growth," said Mr. Doug H. Horswill Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Horswill, on behalf of the Board noted that under Mr. Peeling's
leadership, MAC has achieved considerable milestones:
a Globe Foundation award for leadership in sustainable development and
several awards as one of the early movers on climate change
the innovative development of a widely recognized leading edge
sustainable development program called Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM)
MAC became the first and still the only national mining association to
have a mandatory sustainability program that includes third party
verification of its performance reporting. One of the keys to this
success was the creation of the Community of Interest Advisory Panel
which provides on-going and critical advice to the association on TSM and other policy areas
stronger relationships with Canada's indigenous peoples to the point
where the industry is a leading employer of aboriginal Canadians
in 2009 MAC cemented its working relationship with the Assembly of First
Nations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding
active participation in the Government of Canada's Corporate Social Responsibility Round Tables
In a joint statement, both Mr. Horswill and Mr. Peeling noted that: "Despite the current success, our members recognize much work lies ahead.
As we move forward, MAC's organizational willingness to seek solutions
in partnership with others positions it well to meet future
"Every organization benefits from periods of renewal and given the
exciting future facing the industry, it is time to bring on the next
generation of leadership," added Mr. Horswill.
The Mining Association of Canada's Board of Directors has initiated a
search for Mr. Peeling's successor as President and Chief Executive
Officer and engaged the Executive Search firm of Renaud Foster.
