The Mining Association of Canada announces stepping down of President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Gordon Peeling

OTTAWA, Jan. 26 /CNW/ - The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) today announced that its President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Gordon R. Peeling plans to step down as head of the association as of April 30, 2011.

"We are deeply appreciative of Gordon's contribution to this organization. Over the thirteen plus years of his tenure, he has been instrumental to MAC's success and growth," said Mr. Doug H. Horswill Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Horswill, on behalf of the Board noted that under Mr. Peeling's leadership, MAC has achieved considerable milestones:

  • a Globe Foundation award for leadership in sustainable development and several  awards as one of the early movers on climate change
  • the innovative development of a widely recognized leading edge sustainable development program called Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM)
  • MAC became the first and still the only national mining association to have a mandatory sustainability program that includes third party verification of its performance reporting.  One of the keys to this success was the creation of the Community of Interest Advisory Panel which provides on-going and critical advice to the association on TSM and other policy areas
  • stronger relationships with Canada's indigenous peoples to the point where the industry is a leading employer of aboriginal Canadians
  • in 2009 MAC cemented its working relationship with the Assembly of First Nations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding
  • active participation in the Government of Canada's Corporate Social Responsibility Round Tables

In a joint statement, both Mr. Horswill and Mr. Peeling noted that: "Despite the current success, our members recognize much work lies ahead. As we move forward, MAC's organizational willingness to seek solutions in partnership with others positions it well to meet future challenges."

"Every organization benefits from periods of renewal and given the exciting future facing the industry, it is time to bring on the next generation of leadership,"  added Mr. Horswill

The Mining Association of Canada's Board of Directors has initiated a search for Mr. Peeling's successor as President and Chief Executive Officer and engaged the Executive Search firm of Renaud Foster.
