TORONTO, Sept. 9 /CNW/ - The Michener Institute for Applied Health
Sciences is continuing its fall 50th Anniversary celebrations with a free
neighbourhood Street Party on Sunday, September 14th, 2008 from 12-5 p.m. As
the third 50th Anniversary event, the Street Party will gather together
members of the Michener community with our neighbours to celebrate our golden
For 35 years Michener's imposing building on 222 St. Patrick Street has
mystified the neighbourhood in which we reside. Michener wants to end the
mystery and bring all of that information out for our community. With this
event, we hope to share all of the valuable accomplishments in health care
education Michener has had in the last 50 years, with the hopes that the
community will be more engaged in our successes in the next 50 years.
A unique line-up of entertainers for the Street Party have been booked to
interest audiences of all ages. Acts include:
- Musical act Sunshine State, an acoustic pop duo based in Toronto
- Percussion based ensemble iDRUM
- Michener alumni and instrumentalist/vocalist Garen Markarian
- Capoeira Camara, performers of a form of martial art performed to
- Hip hop artists Elements of Surprise
- a DJ to play music between acts
We will also have Elephant Thoughts who will entertain children with
science based activities, games and other surprises in the Kid Zone and
Glacéau will be giving out free samples of vitamin water.
"Michener's Street Party will give us the opportunity to engage the
community in what we do for health care education and enable our neighbours to
build direct relationships with us," explains Dr. Paul Gamble, President and
CEO, The Michener Institute. "This is a fun, community-based event for people
of all ages to discover the Dundas/University and Baldwin Street
neighbourhood, as well as The Michener Institute."
In addition to the Street Party, Michener will host Homecoming Weekend at
the end of November to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. For Homecoming,
Michener is presenting three separate events to celebrate with our alumni:
- A Pub Night with food, drinks and dancing - Friday, November 21 from
- An Alumni Brunch with a hot buffet breakfast and a chance to mingle
with fellow alumni and faculty - Saturday, November 22 from 10 a.m. to
- A Gala Dinner for alumni and friends at The Toronto Marriott Downtown
Eaton Centre Hotel - Saturday, November 22 at 6 p.m.
The street party is free to the public and Michener invites everyone from
our community and anyone else who would like to join us to celebrate our
golden anniversary to come out for Michener's 50th Anniversary Street Party.
