TORONTO, Aug. 24 /CNW/ - It is with great sorrow that I write my final
tribute to my friend and mentor Jack Brewer.
However, it is with inspiration that I look back at the legacy of Jack.
Jack was 61 years old, the pre-eminent restaurateur in Toronto. His
restaurant which was more than a restaurant represented everything that was
good in Toronto in the 1970's and beyond.
The Chick n' Deli was the in place, it was hip, it was cool and a place
to be seen. The food was great, the bands were hotter, the people were truly
incredible and from every walk of life, and representative of the Toronto
sports and business scene, everyone knew the Deli at Mount Pleasant and
Jack's ability to draw in an eclectic group of individuals and provide
them with the ability to become life long friends was unique.
There is not a place in North America where I do not meet someone who
knew Jack and the Chick n' Deli, they were synonymous.
Jack Brewer was much more than a restaurateur, he was a mentor and
someone who was very instrumental in letting me start my business, he was
always there when I needed him.
Toronto has lost not only a great personality but a great person. While
he will no longer be with us on a day to day basis, his legacy will never be
As Humphrey Bogart would have said
Jack was definitely a brilliant saloon keeper.
I loved Jack Brewer he introduced me to a Toronto in a way I never knew
it. I will miss his welcoming smile, his laughter, and having a few cocktails
with the boys at the Chick n' Deli.
In closing, it was February 1989 and Jack and his Brother Carl the former
Toronto Maple Leaf we were at the Deli and then the Hot Stove Club at Maple
Leaf Gardens, I stated I was moving to Dartmouth Nova Scotia in May for a new
job. After a lot of fun, hockey talk, and good conversation and one or two
cocktails Carl stated that Jack should lend Donny $ 35,000.00 tomorrow to
start his new environmental business so I wouldn't move to the east coast.
Jack agreed the next day but I picked up a cheque for only $10,000.00 because
I was afraid I couldn't pay back the $35 thousand. For those of you who know
me my life changed that day forever.
Come Celebrate on Monday August 27 at 4pm the Life of Jack Brewer at the
Chick n' Deli 744 Mount Pleasant Rd Toronto.
